Once you've picked a region, hotels are the central choice for staying safer while traveling. Do they ventilate, mask and social distance? When staff are showing symptoms, does the hotel make it easy for staff to stay home? If you get sick, will the hotel coordinate an extended stay?  We have a general search which will take you through Booking.com.  Although we've centered it on Belize due to their fantastic Gold Star safety system, you can pan out and search anywhere.  Once you've found a hotel, Booking.com gives further information about COVID protocols that are required.

What makes for a safe hotel?

If you are going to travel, finding a hotel that puts in a best effort, and helps you coordinate safer travel.

  • Provide paid sick leave; make sure their staff is healthy. Covid theater warning: Hotels that say they tell their staff not to come in if sick, but don't support the staff, are not keeping you safe.
  • Have and share their plan for COVID safety.
  • Help staff get vaccinated.
  • Have mask policies for both staff and guests, depending on vaccination status and local conditions, along with good attention to cleaning. Covid theater warning: Not just "policies," but efforts to create a culture where mask-wearing is normal and expected.
  • Coordinate transportation and restaurants that are COVID safe.
  • Have a plan if someone at the hotel — guest or staff — contracts COVID.
  • Encourage guests to take extra efforts. You are a lot safer if most of your neighbors wore KN95s in the airport or on the shuttle from the airport.
  • Encourage guests to write reviews that include COVID safety!
