They've handled Covid-19 pretty well: people were wearing masks in January 2020, and for getting started early they never really had to shut down. Today the more aggressive variants are spreading though not out of control, and Thailand is desperate to reopen tourism, which is a massive part of their economy. Until recently visiting Thailand has involved a long quarantine in a hotel room — something worth doing to connect for long term travelers or people visiting family. What makes it easy: new visas with 90-day stays that can be renewed twice. Thailand might be an amazing choice for work-from-home from a beach. The goal is turn Phuket into a "sandbox" for tourism: increasing the speed of vaccinations, letting travelers come without needing to quarantine. If you're vaccinated you, can go to Phuket and leave your hotel. If you are a long-term traveler, than instead of being locked in a hotel room, you are just restricted to an entire island. As Phuket becomes vaccinated — or Bali in Indonesia — travel might be possible soon. I'd recommend waiting at least a few weeks to see if these countries can get a handle on the new more aggressive variants or not.
