I'm traveling Costa Rica during the peak of Omicron back home. Costa Rica held off just a little longer: which means rates are quite high. Most tourists, not surprisingly, are doing their best to pretend Covid isn't happening. There is a big positive: very little of life on the beach happens indoors. I would have to go out of my way to eat indoors.
It's a great idea to always carry a quality mask: an outdoor restaurant may have an enclosed bathroom, suddenly you are exposed to whoever was there one minute before. Bank ATMs tend to be tightly enclosed. Hotel owners rarely wear masks, or imitate you: I've found that if I show up at reception in a mask they are likely to put one on as well. Locals who wish tourists would wear masks are usually out of luck. Personally, I hope more tourists will stop treating service professionals as servants, expecting them to wear masks so we aren't exposed, but forced to absorb our risks whether they care to or not. Even if you are boosted and more, please mask up when you are a guest or hiring someone who's wearing a mask.
