As I'm traveling Costa Rica, many hotels are relatively safe even when they don't try: the reception is open air, the walk to my room is open air, restaurants have breezes, and I have windows so don't have to care about ventilation.
But, as a budget traveler, I sometimes wind up in hotels with shared bathrooms. With Covid airborne, and lines for the shower in the morning, this is one of my larger risks since stepping out of the van. Unlike most other risks, it's not showing up searches, which is fair: hotels can't rebuild for the year after Covid. But we're scoring them for private bathrooms, and encourage budget travelers to look for this when searching.
The other big thing I want to watch for — that no hotels are advertising — is a hotel that can look out for me and help me not spread Covid if I catch it.
